I bought this broom about a year ago. It came in several parts, so today I finally decided to unwrap it and put it together. Even for my clumsy hands it was a doddle.
And then to use it. Normally, I hoover the kitchen floor, but my machine wouldn’t pick up the leaves, ( from the lovely get well flowers I received ) so I needed to sweep.

And as you can see, sweep I did.
The whole activity reminded me of my mum who was very clean and tidy and scrupulously houseproud. In Polish – pedantka- but I don’t think pedantic quite means the same.
Anyway, one day, when my children were very small and I was very tired, she came round to help. Normally she came for coffee and to smoke several cigarettes, but this particular day she was in active mode. I was upstairs for a little while, and when I came down I discovered she had swept the floor.
I was suitably grateful – she was very pleased with herself – oh it looks so much better, doesn’t it? and then I went to throw something away! I had to burst out laughing!
She hadn’t thrown the sweepings away, just left them by the bin. I looked at her and she burst out laughing too. She apparently couldn’t find the dustpan and brush!!!
We looked back on that moment for years afterwards. It was so out of character! And I am looking at that little pile of dust now and psyching myself up to look for the dustpan and brush!
What a great memory. I wish she would come here for a few days and clean the old fashion way.

She always had someone to do it for her. Her pernickitiness seemed to inspire great loyalty.

I had a housecleaner for years and loved coing home each week to a clean house. When I remarried we had a housekeeper but our two dogs now are crazy and just follow them around making it hard to them to work. It’s sad for me because I love a clean house but not good at being spotless. That’s a full time job.

“Houseproud” is a great word. I’d never seen it before.

It’s what all British housewives used to pride themselves on. It hasn’t filtered down to me as a concept, really

My Mum was only garden proud ie the bit the neighbours see, inside the house not so much. She was very particular about the bins and recycling, even dishwashing the tins to sparkling before she put them out, keeping up appearances.
